CFFC 151 - Gonzales vs. Resende Preview
MAIN EVENT: LARRY GONZALES VS. VITOR RESENDE
CFFC heavyweight champion Larry Gonzales (8-4 MMA, 1-0 CFFC) was the underdog when he stepped in as a replacement opponent for then-champ Anthony Guarascio this past November, but "OSO" was confident that if he could simply survive the early power of his opponent, he would rally to finish things in the second round. Gonzales made good on that promise and took home a submission win to claim the title.
Now, four months later, it's the 6-foot-9 Brazilian Vitor Resende (5-1 MMA, 1-0 CFFC) who finds himself in an eerily similar situation.
Resende was victorious in his promotional debut this past April, but injury forced him to the sidelines in the time since. However, when Tafon Nchukwi withdrew from a planned matchup with Gonzales in the CFFC 151 headliner, it was Resende who was able to answer the call.
Will history repeat itself and see a replacement opponent walk away with the heavyweight title? Or will Gonzales win his fourth fight in a nine-month stretch as he aims for a Dana White's Contender Series invitation? We'll find out in the CFFC 151 main event.
CO-MAIN EVENT: ANTHONY GUARASCIO VS. JACKSON STANFORD
With a planned bantamweight title fight scrapped, former CFFC champion Anthony "The Daywalker" Guarascio (3-2 MMA, 2-1 CFFC) and the undefeated Jackson "The Last Caveman" Stanford (2-0 MMA, 0-0 CFFC) get the shine of the co-main event slot in a doubleheader of heavyweight tilts at the top of the bill.
Guarascio was on top of the world just one year ago, claiming the CFFC belt with a stunning first-round upset over then-champ Bailey Schoenfelder. However, it's been rocky going since, as Guarascio suffered a 16-second loss in his trip to Dana White's Contender Series and then returned to work two months later only to cede his title to Gonzales. He now finds himself in dire need of a statement rebound.
However, the 29-year-old Stanford has entirely different plans.
A Pennsylvania native now living in Florida and training at The Jungle MMA, Stanford was a perfect 5-0 as an amateur with four stoppages and has shown the same type of finishing abilities in his first two pro appearances with two first-round knockouts.
This one might not last long.
ASHTON CHARLTON VS. MORQUEZ FOREST
In a featured lightweight matchup, promotional newcomer Ashton Charlton (9-3 MMA, 0-0 CFFC) takes on former CFFC interim champion Morquez "Black Clover" Forest (7-1 MMA, 5-1 CFFC).
A Sikjitsu fighter hailing from Washington, Charlton has earned all nine of his career wins by stoppage, including seven by submission. Perhaps even more impressive, eight of those stoppages were earned in the first round. He now makes his CFFC debut against Forest, who claimed an interim CFFC belt in 2024 with a thrilling submission win over Robert Varricchio. While he came up short in a unification bout with current PFL fighter Robert Watley, Forest has since bounced back with two straight wins outside of the promotion and now looks to prove victorious in his CFFC return.
LIAM HAMILL VS. RON HUMPHREY
Undefeated welterweights with MMA family lineage's collide when Liam "The Hitman" Hamill (4-0 MMA, 0-0 CFFC) faces Ron "The Career Ender" Humphrey (3-0 MMA, 0-0 CFFC).
Hamill is the nephew of "The Ultimate Fighter 3" cast member and 15-time UFC veteran Matt Hamill. The 24-year-old Ohio native has opened his pro carer with four straight wins, include three first-round knockouts. Meanwhile, Humphrey is the son of four-time Strikeforce veteran Ron "Abongo" Humphrey. Training under the American Top Team Atlanta banner, the 25-year-old Humphrey has three straight knockouts of his own to kick off his pro run following an undefeated amateur career, as well.
True opportunity for a statement win on a big stage for each of these athletes in their CFFC debut.
CHRISTIAN CARR VS. TYRIME DA SILVA
Top featherweight finishers collide next, as the returning Christian "Strictly Business" Carr (4-2 MMA, 1-0 CFFC) returns to take on a promotional newcomer in the undefeated Tyrime "The Dream" Da Silva (6-0 MMA, 0-0 CFFC).
Good Boy Family fighter Carr debuted for the organization with a slick D'Arce choke win at CFFC 147 in October and was initially schedule to face the talented Shaun Stant at CFFC 151. When Stant was forced to with draw from the card, in stepped Da Silva, a Cape Verde native who recently relocated to Florida and is training with Fusion X-Cel Performance.
Both Carr and Da Silva have earned every one of their professional victories by stoppage.
PAUL CARSON VS. LUCAS CORTES
Kicking off the main card is a middleweight contest between promotional newcomer Paul "The Phoenix" Carson (3-1 MMA, 0-0 CFFC) and the returning Lucas "Ugi" Cortes (2-1 MMA, 1-1 CFFC).
Hailing from North Carolina's Gym-O, Carson dropped his pro debut in 2023 but since rallied back with three consecutive wins, including two straight first-round rear-naked chokes. Meanwhile, American Top Team's Cortes had a spectacular 44-second submission win in his promotional; debut 11 months ago before returning in October and suffering a third-round loss in a "Fight of the Night" battle with fellow top prospect Bill Lewis.
CHANCE BECK VS. BLAKE SMITH
The final preliminary bout of the evening takes place at lightweight as late replacement Chance "City Boy" Beck (11-7) takes on former CFFC champion Blake "Honey Badger" Smith (10-4).
Beck stepped into the matchup on just one week's notice and will now make his promotional debut 15 months later than originally expected after he withdrew from a planned CFFC 138 appearance. It was part of a run of several unfortunate cancellations for Beck, who now competes for the first time in 21 months.
Meanwhile, Smith steps in agains the third scheduled opponent he agreed to face at CFFC 151 after Devon Dixon and John De Jesus were each forced off the card. Smith carries a three-fight win streak into the appearance.
KENNY AGOSTO VS. DIEGO ALEMAN
With the planned championship matchup delayed, the lone bantamweight contest of the night sees Kenny Agosto (4-2) against Diego "Hustler Ambition" Aleman (2-2).
Hailing from Connecticut, The Jungle MMA's Agosto fought most recently 10 months ago, scoring a first-round submission win that saw him break a disappointing two-fight slide. He now meets Nicaragua's Aleman, who opened his carer with two first-round finishes but now finds himself mired in his own two-fight skid he's looking to snap.
TOMMY LAIPPLY VS. BRAYTON YOUNG
An all-Florida affair takes place at featherweight as Venice's Tommy Laipply (2-3) faces Sarasota's Brayton Young (Pro debut).
Gracie PAC's Laipply has had mixed results thus far in three appearances under the CFFC banner but has faced stiff competition in Christian Carr, Jaylon McDaniel and Morquez Forest. Now he aims to show the promised he displayed in a 5-0 amateur run. Meanwhile, Young makes his professional debut after a stellar 9-2 run of his own that included six wins by stoppage and saw him earn recognition as the No. 4 lightweight prospect in all of North America.
FATHY ELSONY VS. CODY PORTER
A pair of middleweights victorious in their professional debuts will each look to make it two in a row, as Cody Porter (1-0) takes on Fathy Elsony (1-0).
Training out of Idaho's BPi Fighting Systems, Porter impressed at November's CFFC 148, scoring a first-round submission win via heel hook over the highly touted Bill Lewis. He returns to take on Egypt's Elsony, a striking specialist who moves to the U.S. to train at Florida's legendary American Top Team in Coconut Creek.
EMAN HARDY VS. MALCOLM WALLACE
The evening kicks off in the welterweight division, as the returning Eman "The One Who Knocks" Hardy (1-1) welcomes Florida's own Malcolm "The Ronin" Wallace (Pro debut) who competes for the first time as a professional.
Hardy made his promotional debut in November, coming up short on the cards against former CFFC NextGen champ Jose Rodriguez. The Delaware native now returns seeking his first promotional victory as he takes on Wallace, who turns pro following an 8-0 amateur career that saw him finish as the No. 3 welterweight prospect in all of North America according to Tapology.com.
