Ali AlQaisi, Sylvester Chipfumbu, Asaf Chopurov and João Pedro Saldanha are all winners, but by the end of the night of the 23rd of July, two will taste rare defeats and one, will become the very first Intercontinental Champion of UAE Warriors.
Let’s take a closer look at the quartet of killers of UAE Warriors 61.
The Arabia versus Africa Intercontinental Featherweight Title Fight between Ali ‘The Royal Fighter’ AlQaisi and Sylvester ‘Gladiator’ Chipfumbu
The most famous Jordanian mixed martial artist of all time is the former UAE Warriors World and current Arabia featherweight champ and had an incredible return to form against Vicente Vargas at UAEW 57, which was much-needed after the keyboard vultures began circling following consecutive losses to Cogliandro and Bark.
Having had more title fights than anyone else in our promotional history (7), he has had numerous opportunities to display his outstanding cardio which can carry him through all five rounds with most of his wins coming from wars he won by decision.
That being said, the Hashemite hero has some slick submissions, with his guillotine choke being particularly fast and tight. He takes on the former EFC Bantamweight champ, Chipfumbu (who beat UAE Warriors 62’s Faeez Jacobs for that belt) a Zimbabwean who still has a burning desire to rematch with Jaures Dea to whom he lost in ‘22 by a decision which aggrieves him to this day.
The ‘Gladiator’ from Gweru had a tough promotional debut losing to Lokdog in the first round as a late replacement at UAEW 24 two years before Vinicius went to the UFC. But that and Jaures were Sylvester’s only losses here, with victories over Fernandes, Boumri and Mando all being finishes. He’s moved around camps quite a lot which often raises questions of consistency, but his talent, humility and work ethic more than make up for it and consequently Warriors fans have benefitted with some of the most entertaining bouts in 145lb divisional history.
Like ‘The Royal Fighter’, he also has experience of the deeper rounds but prefers to finish with the fists whilst the Amman man gets his stoppages from subs. For years Chipfumbu’s been asking for this title shot, whilst a victory for Ali would make him the first ever human to become a title-holder in three different Warriors formats. History awaits heavily on both their shoulders.
The co-main event appetiser between Asaf Chopurov and João Pedro Saldanha
On a remarkable 20-fight winning streak with an amateur record of 33-1, Chopurov is a Sambo stance switcher who won the 2021 IMMAF World Champs here in Abu Dhabi and also has a string of Russian golds in a variety of codes.
An eclectic training background having mixed-up Jeet Kune Do and Muay Thai with his Sambo, he often splits camps between Moscow, Baku and Phuket which accounts for his crazy hand speed and creative submissions, though his only two previous appearances with us were wins from rear-nakeds. This incredible talent continues his trend of taking on more experienced opponents, with former Jungle Fight Bantam champ, Saldanha next up.
Training at Martial 81 in Brasilia he is an aggressive sub-hunter with six out of nine first-round finishes from taps. Lethal off his back and blessed with a steelwire anaconda, he nonetheless has three KO’s on his record with a style that also provides opportunities to his opponents.
One of those KO’s secured him the Jungle Fight belt in a 2024 during which he fought five times, this Warriors debut will already be his fifth bout of ’25. With such an industrious calendar and coming-off another first-round Jungle Fight finish just last month, he’s looking in ominous form and will be landing at Zayed International motivated in taking Chopurov’s ‘O’.
